South Wales paddlesport weekend
Friday 1 – Sunday 3 June 2012
(Formerly Islwyn Weekend)
A kayak and canoe training and assessment weekend in south Wales for Scouts and leaders to gain the new BCU/CW one, two or three star proficiency awards, plus an opportunity to undertake the BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue course.
Each paddler must come fully equipped with his/her own paddling equipment; some kayaks and canoes may be available by contact to the local Scout district. The craft should be in good condition and registered with their Scout district and will be inspected by the coaching staff prior to being allowed on the water. Group leaders or responsible adults should be available to carry out repairs to any craft failing inspection and to be ashore to care for any paddler who for any reason leaves the water.
Camping is available on this weekend at Islwyn Scout Parc in Newbridge; contact Clive Harrison on 01443 839458 to make your own arrangements.
If not camping, paddlers need to arrive by 9am on each of the two mornings at Pen Y Fan pond in the Country Park.
Successful 1 and 2 star candidates will be issued with a Canoe Wales pass slip that should be sent to CW, along with their fee, to exchange for a certificate. CW will be notified of successful 3 star and Foundation Safety and Rescue participations.
Foundation Safety and Rescue candidates should also try and bring a tow line and throwbag and any rescue equipment already posessed, and recognise that tehy will spend a lot of time in the water and dress accordingly!
This course and the 3 star course are subject to CW registration and early intention of participation is vital. The courses will be cancelled if numbers are insufficient.
Cost
- £21 per head for 1 and 2 stars
- £28 per head for 3 star if member of BCU/CW, £38 if not a member.
- £28 per head for Foundation Safety and Rescue if member of BCU/CW £33 if not a member.
Proof of membership of either BCU or CW must be provided.
