Islwyn kayak training weekend
Saturday 12 – Sunday 13 June 2010
A kayak and canoe training and assessment weekend in south Wales for scouts and leaders to gain the new BCU/WCA one, two or three star UKCC
awards, plus training and assessment for the Foundation in Safety & Rescue.
Each paddler must come fully equipped with a slalom type kayak, buoyancy aid, paddle and a spraydeck. The kayak should be in good condition and registered with their scout district and will be inspected by the instructor staff prior to being allowed on the water. Group leaders or responsible adults should be available to carry out repairs to any craft failing inspection and to be ashore to care for any paddler who for any reason leaves the water.
Camping is available on this weekend at Islwyn District Scout campsite in Newbridge; contact Clive Harrison on 01443 839458 to make your own arrangements.
If not camping, paddlers need to arrive by 9am on each of the two mornings at Pen Y Fan pond in the Country Park.
Successful 1 and 2 star candidates will be issued with a WCA pass slip that should be sent to the WCA, along with their fee, to exchange for a certificate. The WCA will be notified of successful 3 star and Foundation in Safety & Rescue participations.
For Foundation in Safety & Rescue, candidates should also try and bring a tow line and throwbag. This course and the 3 Star course are subject to WCA registration and early intention of participation is vital, the courses will be cancelled if numbers are insufficient.
Cost
- £15 per head for 1 & 2 Star
- £25.00 per head for 3 Star if member of BCU/WCA, £35 if not a member.
- £25 per head for Foundation in Safety and Rescue if member of BCU/WCA £30 if not a member.
Proof of membership of either BCU or WCA must be provided.
